Exploring Cuttyhunk Island: The Top 5 Activities for Your Island Adventure

Nestled in the heart of Buzzards Bay, Cuttyhunk Island offers a unique blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a fishing buff, or simply seeking a serene getaway, Cuttyhunk has something to offer every visitor. In this guide, I’ll cover my top 5 things to do on Cuttyhunk Island.

1. Fishing Paradise

Cuttyhunk Island is renowned for its excellent fishing opportunities. Anglers flock here to try their luck in the bountiful waters surrounding the island. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a novice, you can try your luck on land or hire a fishing charter to catch striped bass, bluefish, and more. The island’s pristine shores and tranquil atmosphere make it an angler’s paradise.

I’m not an avid fisherman but my husband knows he can count on me if the fish are biting. Cuttyhunk is one of the few places it’s easy to get me in the boat. We do at least one fishing charter every season and it never disappoints. We always bring back some assortment of striped bass or bluefish and have the most delicious dinner with our freshly caught fish.

2. Sunset or sunrise at the top of tower hill

For nature lovers, Cuttyhunk Island offers several hiking and nature trails that provide stunning views of the island’s landscapes. One of my favorite places is at the very top of Tower Hill Road. It’s the island’s highest point, for panoramic vistas of the surrounding waters and neighboring islands. It’s beautiful anytime of the day but the sunrise and sunsets are truly breathtaking.

3. Sea Glass Treasure Hunt

Cuttyhunk Island’s rugged coastline is a treasure trove for sea glass enthusiasts. Spend your day beachcombing along the shores, where the Atlantic’s gentle waves have polished shards of glass into beautiful, smooth gems. From vivid greens to soft blues, you can find a rainbow of colors glistening in the sun. Sea glass hunting is not only a relaxing and meditative activity but also a way to connect with the island’s maritime history.

You can find sea glass at any of Cuttyhunk’s beaches but my favorite one is Church’s beach. You will find the most glass during low tide, especially after a big storm. Walk slowly along the beach right along the water line and scan back and forth where the fine sand turns into small pebbles for shimmering rocks. After you find one it almost becomes an addiction and before you know it you’ve scoured the entire beach!

4. Dining and Socializing at the Fishing Dock

Some would say the heart of Cuttyhunk’s vibrant community lies at the fishing dock. Here, you can enjoy not only the freshest catches of the day but also the warm camaraderie of fellow visitors and locals alike.

Several charming restaurants line the dock, offering a variety of snacks, meals, and/or dessert options. Savor a cheeseburger or lobster roll while taking in the picturesque views of the harbor. It’s also an excellent spot to strike up conversations with friendly islanders and fellow travelers, sharing stories and recommendations that make your visit even more enjoyable.

You can find us down here several times a week when were on island to grab a clam chowder appetizer, full meal when we don’t feel like cooking or an ice cream treat after dinner. It’s also a great place for happy hour!

5. Enjoying the water

Take advantage of the island’s coastal location by engaging in various water-based activities. Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular choices, allowing you to explore the island’s coastline at your own pace.

If you don’t want to be on the water, another fun activity is simply sitting on channel beach and watching the boats come in and out. On busy days it’s almost like a parade with the variety of vessels and people waiving hello

In conclusion, Cuttyhunk Island offers a wide range of activities for visitors to enjoy. Whether you’re interested in fishing, hiking, history, or simply lounging on the beach, this charming island has it all. Make sure to add Cuttyhunk to your travel itinerary for an unforgettable island getaway.
